OLIVER SPENCER S/S 2014

Last night, we stepped out to support our friends at Oliver Spencer, who previewed their Basquiat-inspired S/S 2014 collection. As big fans of good drinks and great fashion, of course we had to make an appearance!

JOUR DU MACARON

Also known as ‘Macaron Day,’ the 'Jour du Macaron' is an annual tradition, established in Paris and now celebrated all over the world. This event is usually held in support of local charitable organizations (as selected by participating chefs). This year, our favourite cafe and pastry shop, NADÈGE, has partnered with the SickKids Foundation, and will donate a portion of their macaron sales to support patients being treated by The Hospital for Sick Children. They'll be offering macaron lovers an all-new blueberry vanilla macaron in the SickKids hospital’s signature blue.
Make sure to support them by eating some tasty treats for a great cause. We're putting on our best macaron shirt in support of the cause as well!

PICK OF THE WEEK

Years is a piece "composed" by nature. A custom-built record player created by artist Bartholomäus Traubeck has has made it possible to "play" and hear cross-sectional slices of tree trunks.

Much like a record player's needle reads the grooves on an LP, the audio recording of tree rings are read by a computer and turned into music. The tree rings are not actually sounding musical in and of themselves (as we originally wondered when we first heard it), but rather, are being translated into the language of music.
According to livescience.com, "The custom record player takes in data using a PlayStation Eye Camera and a stepper motor attached to its control arm, and relays the data to a computer. A program called Ableton Live then uses it to generate an eerie piano track." And, that "though the record player 'interprets' rather than actually 'playing' the tree trunk, the song still vaaries with each new piece of wood."
Science!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TORONTO!

Today, our dear city turns 180 years old! To celebrate, we thought we'd share the evolution of one of our favourite Toronto neighbourhoods—Queen West, of course!

Portraits of Queen West, by Kevin Steele is a great representation of the ever-changing landscape of the city. Different shops, buildings, and people have helped to shape this wonderful piece of Canada that we call home. We're absolutely honoured to be a part of this city's rich history.

Here are a few photos of our store front, taken by Patrick Cummins long before it was ours.

LOOK OF THE DAY: THE OSCARS

For our top picks at this year's Academy Awards, we chose the two men in white and their golden friend, Oscar. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both impressed in their dapper tuxes—and apparently, their acting impressed too, as both actors won Oscars for their roles in The Dallas Buyers Club.
Who were your picks for best dressed at the Oscars?
