It was September and Simon and Gervaise were having a long weekend on Lake Como. Gervaise wanted to go for a trip in the seaplane, but needless to say, Simon was visiting his favourite silk mill.

'Marco, what happens to all the scraps?'

'Ah, we have to throw them away, too small to turn into ties.'

But not too small to turn into dogs, thought Simon. 'Hold still, Gervaise! I need to see how much silk it takes to cover you completely!'
